Dunsmuir Hardware

The traditional hardware store of Dunsmuir - California's historic railroad town. Founded by Dunsmuir's first mayor - Alexander Levy - in 1894 and continuing today as a full service TRUE VALUE hardware store. This blog is simply intended to be a running commentary on operating a century old small town hardware store. Also please check our our website at www.dunsmuirhardware.com

Closed

It's one of the few days that we close the store. New Year Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Most fall on Monday and since Monday is the day that we need to prepare our True Value Order it usually means that I need to go in and work on it. Strange that when the store is open it takes me literally all day to prepare an order but when the store is closed I can do it in two hours; no interruptions. While I was there today the phone must have rung ten times. I suppose that if we were open we would have a certain amount of business but then - need to kick back and gather our wits occasionally. As usual, when school started in August things began to slow down. The summer frenzy is over and autumn is around the corner. Weather is cooler - almost cold in the early mornings - and the days are getting shorter. Have to begin to shift my brain into preparing for winter - slow down on buying summer items and begin to phase in winter things. Lots of nice weather still to come though which means some tourism as well as local folks with their projects. Gas is down to $3.15 (amazing - DOWN to $3.15!) and predicted to drop more. It does seem to cheer people up a bit.
