The traditional hardware store of Dunsmuir - California's historic railroad town. Founded by Dunsmuir's first mayor - Alexander Levy - in 1894 and continuing today as a full service TRUE VALUE hardware store. This blog is simply intended to be a running commentary on operating a century old small town hardware store. Also please check our our website at www.dunsmuirhardware.com

WHAT A WINTER!

Did we say something about predicting the weather? From our early - before Thanksgiving - snow until now it's been a roller coaster ride. Super cold - windy - dry - balmy and warm - a bit of everything but not much moisture. None since early January. This photo - taken on November 29 of last year - shows a little snow on the ground. It's the photo being used in a grand experiment for us. We've contracted for a year of advertising at the Mt. Shasta Theater. Our brief - 20 second - ad will show every night in all three theaters for a year. It features some old scenes of our business and carries the message about our hundred year plus heritage. The final message is "Drop in and see what's new in the old fashioned hardware store." It's expensive advertising but is an attempt to reach the Mt. Shasta market. Hope to draw more customers from that town to ours. All advertising is a gamble so we'll just have to wait and see if it works.

Your store is well worth the drive from Mount Shasta, and I am proud to show it off to visitors from far away places like Simms, Gazelle, and even Montague!!
But I am at a loss for anything else to entertain folks in Uptown Dunsmuir. Maybe you could open a soda fountain, movie theater, or bowling alley?
I have a few old bowling balls in storage somewhere...

Thanks for the nice comment, Goo. As for the entertainment in "uptown Dunsmuir", yeah - there is a need for more in our business district. A few thoughts on it; (1) some of it is a sign of the times. It's a tough time for small towns and small businesses. Hopefully as the economy recovers we'll see some activity. (2) Our town seems to go in cycles. We've seen it before. Businesses fill up and then empty and then fill up again. Where we are now is sort of an example of that; we're in one of the empty times. As the cycle continues we'll see more happening. (3) there are some bright spots. The new Dunsmuir Brewing Works is a marvelous addition to the list of fine restaurants that Dunsmuir already has. Gary's Pizza Factory, Sengthongs, Cafe Maddelina, Brown Trout Gallery, Burger Barn, Hotdog Depot, and Hitching Post - an impressive lineup. (4) The downtown beautification projects are impressive. New paint, facade renovations, a new mural, all are steps to make Dunsmuir attractive to new businesses and new visitors as the economy turns - and it will! Thanks again for the nice compliment - next time you're in town stop in and say hello.

OOPS - clicked "publish" and realized I'd forgotten to mention the Cornerstone Restaurant in my list of fine dining establishments. How could I!! Ed and Janet have built a fine reputation and created a landmark in our downtown that brings many visitors - probably even from Simms, Gaselle and Montague.
